Explosion at Pyrotechnics Company in Winzendorf – Conditions Apparently Ignored

According to the Wiener Neustadt district authority (BH), the production of the affected substance KDNBF by the company had in principle been prohibited through official proceedings. The ban has been in force since 8 July. Information from the ongoing investigations now suggests that this order was not consistently observed at laboratory scale or in comparable parts of production.

Authority Order in Place Since July

The company itself refers to its safety standards in a statement. It states that it had manufactured safety-critical components for the automotive vehicle industry – contributing worldwide to the protection of human lives – "unter konsequentester Einhaltung aller gesetzlichen und behördlichen Verpflichtungen sowie höchsten Sicherheits- und Qualitätsstandards". Investigators see this claim at odds with the current findings.

The district authority had stopped the production of the affected substance with a formal administrative order. The authority was apparently responding to concerns related to safety or hazardous-substances law. The question of the extent to which production or trade nevertheless continued is now a central part of the investigations.

Regulation for Hazardous Substances

The substance KDNBF is classified as a hazardous substance, the handling of which is strictly regulated within the European Union. Corresponding requirements cover storage quantities, processing quantities and safety distances. A violation of such requirements can be prosecuted under Austrian law both administratively and criminally.

The incident occurred in the evening hours of 28 August 2026. Emergency services treated the injured person at the scene before transporting them to a hospital. No further official information on their current condition was initially available.

Local residents reported a loud bang that could be heard in several parts of Winzendorf. Police cordoned off the immediate area around the facility over a wide perimeter to rule out further dangers from possible residues or secondary reactions. An evacuation of the surrounding area was not deemed necessary based on initial findings.

Task Force and Investigations

According to ORF Lower Austria, the task force is now examining the extent to which the authority order was circumvented or undermined. Production records, storage quantities and internal safety protocols are being evaluated for this purpose. Employees are also to be interviewed as part of the investigations.

The public prosecutor's office has been brought in, as there is suspicion of intentional or grossly negligent disregard of official requirements. Should the suspicion be confirmed, the company and responsible individuals face severe penalties and potentially a permanent production ban.

Consequences for the Company

The responsible district authority announced that, once the investigations are concluded, the operation will be subjected to a comprehensive follow-up inspection. The role of possible external supervisory bodies – for instance in the areas of hazardous substances and occupational safety – is also to be reviewed.

The case shines a spotlight on the oversight of sensitive pyrotechnic production facilities in Lower Austria. Initial political reactions from the Wiener Neustadt district are calling for tighter supervision of companies that work with explosive substances.
