Extreme Drought in Styria: Farmers Fear for the Survival of Their Family Farms

Norbert Totschnig has spoken out as a representative of agriculture and pointed to the urgency of state support. He stressed that without swift aid, many farms would have to cease operations. The situation will worsen further if relief does not come in the short term.

In Waidhofen and in the Ybbs Valley, livestock farmers describe the situation as particularly dramatic. Thomas Pristner reports acute fodder shortages, which is why farmers are forced to sell animals earlier than usual or buy fodder at high prices. The feed markets are under heavy strain, and prices have risen significantly.

Monika Fuchsluger, representative of Styrian farmers, pointed to the particular impact on smaller farms. These often lack the financial reserves to bridge longer drought periods. Without state aid, a wave of farm closures threatens, which would permanently alter rural structures.

Styria is one of the most severely affected federal states. There, the drought has hit not only arable farming and grassland but also fruit cultivation and livestock farming hard. Farmers expect partly massive harvest losses for grain, corn, and specialty crops.

Outlook: Further Drought Looms

Styrian farmers are therefore demanding a package of measures: direct aid, tax relief, and accelerated disbursement of subsidies. In addition, adjustments to agricultural policy must be considered in order to better cushion future drought periods.

According to the available information, the weather forecasts do not yet provide any relief. Should the drought persist, further yield losses and a worsening of the fodder shortage in autumn threaten. The sector thus faces one of the most severe crises in recent years.

Farm representatives are calling on the public to continue buying regional products and thereby support domestic agriculture. At the same time, they are renewing their demand for swift political action to secure the survival of the affected family farms.
