ExxonMobil and its partners are investing one billion dollars in the Usan Infill project off the coast of Nigeria, as ExxonMobil Nigeria Managing Director Jagir Baxi confirmed on Tuesday at an oil conference in Abuja.

According to Nigeria's regulator NUPRC, the investment marks the return of the US group to drilling activities in the country. ExxonMobil's last drilling in Nigeria dates back to 2016. With the engagement now announced, the company's own long-dormant production business in Nigeria is to be revived.

The Usan Infill project is an expansion program within the existing Usan field off the Nigerian coast. The project is to deliver first production within 18 months. Production is expected to rise by 40,000 barrels per day as a result, the NUPRC explained. With this additional volume, Nigeria wants to contribute to stabilizing its crude oil production, which has come under pressure recently.
