In Mexico City, at least two people lost their lives during the night into Wednesday while celebrating the Mexican national football team's qualification for the Round of 16.

Background: Mass Celebration After Victory Over Ecuador

Following Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 16 of the World Cup, more than one million people gathered on the streets of the Mexican capital to celebrate advancing to the round of the last 16, according to the city government. Large crowds streamed to, among other places, the Zócalo, the city's central square, and the Paseo de la Reforma.

As authorities reported, a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died by suffocation. According to media reports, a group of people was pressed against a public restroom. The incidents occurred in the Colonia Juárez neighborhood. A possible third fatality has not yet been officially confirmed.
