Farage death threat arrest: Met holds suspect

Widdecombe, a former minister and former member of Parliament, had been most recently associated with Reform UK. Her killing has prompted the party to call publicly for improved protection of its members and has intensified scrutiny of how threats against elected politicians are handled.

Farage has repeatedly complained that authorities have not done enough to act against online threats aimed at him. Reacting to the latest arrest, he noted that it was the first time officers had moved on a social media post without a prior complaint from him. "Das ist das erste Mal, dass die Polizei von sich aus auf einen Social-Media-Beitrag reagiert hat, und ich hoffe, dass sie sich auch die anderen drei- oder vierhundert ähnlichen Beiträge allein aus diesem Jahr ansieht," he said, calling on police to review the roughly 300 to 400 similar posts he says he has received this year.

The arrest is not the first of its kind in 2025 or 2026. Earlier in 2025, a 26-year-old was detained over a separate threat made against Farage. Police have not disclosed whether the latest suspect was known to the force or had any prior contact with Reform UK or its leader.

Farage's resignation and the crypto controversy

Farage has also been at the centre of a separate political storm. He resigned his seat in the House of Commons in recent weeks and said he would stand again in a by-election in his constituency of Clacton. The step was widely interpreted as an attempt to regain momentum after he was accused of accepting advantages and funds from two crypto entrepreneurs, including a convicted fraudster, without reporting the matter to Parliament.

The Telegraph reported that the undeclared gift in question amounted to £5 million (US$6.7 million) from a cryptocurrency billionaire. Farage has not been charged with any offence in connection with the allegation. His resignation did not halt an active Metropolitan Police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported gift.

Investigation continues

The latest arrest appears to have been triggered by Farage's own complaint, although Farage suggested officers acted on their own initiative. Police have not commented publicly on the chain of events that led to the detention, citing the ongoing investigation.

The suspect was held overnight before being released on bail pending further inquiries. No charges have been filed. Officers have asked anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward, and the investigation remains active.

Reform UK has used the incidents to press for a broader review of how political threats are policed online. Party officials said the killing of Widdecombe and the stream of threats against Farage had exposed gaps in the protection afforded to high-profile political figures in Britain.
