A 39-year-old father went under in the Alte Donau in the eastern beach area at Vienna's Gänsehäufel beach resort on Sunday afternoon and died despite rapid rescue measures.

The man went under shortly before 4 p.m. in the eastern beach area in front of the eyes of his wife and two children, as confirmed by the Vienna Fire Brigade. Despite the rapid intervention of the emergency services, the 39-year-old could no longer be saved. With temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius, the responders were dispatched to a major operation on this hot Sunday.

Earlier in the morning, around 11:30 a.m., a rescue helicopter had circled over the popular beach resort. According to the fire brigade, this was triggered by another incident: Around 7 p.m., the alarm was raised because a 24-year-old swimmer had gone missing. Ten fire brigade divers searched for the missing person. Whether this second deployment was directly connected to the fatal accident in the afternoon was initially unclear.
