A 21-year-old Brazilian woman died over the weekend after plunging approximately 40 meters during a rope jumping jump from a railway bridge near the city of Limeira in the state of São Paulo, because the extreme sports company's staff failed to attach her to the safety rope.

Background of the incident

According to the city administration, citing the military police, the accident occurred at the Ponte Do Esqueleto bridge. The woman fell approximately 40 meters without any safety equipment. Mayor Murilo Félix expressed his dismay: "Leider hat die Untätigkeit der Bundesbehörden nun zu einer weiteren Tragödie in Limeira geführt."

The victim has been identified as Maria R., a 21-year-old sports science student from Jandira in the state of São Paulo. As Brazilian media report, citing photos and videos, three men lifted the young woman up on the bridge, two of them carried her a few steps and threw her headfirst into the depths. The safety rope was still lying on the bridge after the fall – according to reports, it had never been attached to the athlete.
