Fatal fall during rope jumping in Brazil: Woman plunges 40 meters unsecured to her death

The woman's fiancé witnessed the accident, according to investigators, and suffered shock. Bystanders recognized the danger and shouted "The rope! The rope!", as shown in video footage obtained by the portal "O Globo." Shortly after the impact, a man can be heard in the background cursing.

Brazilian federal police arrested six men in connection with the incident. According to "O Globo," three of them are to be charged with manslaughter. Two suspects had reportedly attempted to flee but were tracked down and arrested in a helicopter operation.

Investigator Andrea Dantas Levy stated: "Es handelte sich um ein Team ohne jegliche Genehmigung, das nicht einmal die Erlaubnis hatte, dort zu sein." The railway bridge in Limeira had never been put into operation according to official information, but is considered a popular meeting point for extreme sports enthusiasts – even though rope jumping is prohibited there. Nevertheless, according to the authorities, unauthorized jumping events regularly took place there.

Rope jumping – the underestimated extreme sport

Maria R. had announced her planned jump on her Instagram account hours earlier. The account has since been deleted. The footage shows, among other things, her presenting an identification wristband at the entrance and posing with the provider's staff before entering the bridge. Shortly afterward, according to the investigators, she asked: "Wer war der Verrückte, der mich von einer Brücke springen ließ?"

In rope jumping – also known in German as Seilspringen von Brücken oder Bauwerken (rope jumping from bridges or structures) – participants typically secure themselves with a non-elastic climbing rope that is attached offset from the jumping-off point. The jump is cushioned by the pendulum motion of the rope. In contrast, bungee jumping uses a highly stretchable rubber cord.

Political consequences

The incident highlights the lack of regulation of such extreme sports events in the region. Mayor Félix sharply criticized the federal authorities for their "Untätigkeit" (inaction). The public prosecutor's office announced further investigations to hold those responsible for the unlicensed provider accountable.

A spokesperson for the Limeira city administration announced that access to the bridge would be more strictly controlled. It will be examined how unauthorized providers can be prevented from holding jumping events there in the future. The Ponte Do Esqueleto bridge will remain closed for the time being, according to the authorities.
