Frankfurt starts strong, but fades

The visitors struck back before the break. In the 38th minute, Arijon Ibrahimovic equalized following an assist from Fabian Rieder. The 19-year-old attacking player, who had already attracted attention several times this season, coolly exploited a positional mistake by the Frankfurt backline. The teams went into the locker rooms at 1-1.

In the second half, Augsburg completely turned the match around. Fabian Rieder put the visitors ahead in the 57th minute with a long-range shot from around 20 meters. In the 73rd minute, Younes Ebnoutalib sealed the deal with the 3-1. The striker used a counterattack down the right wing and slid the ball past Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp into the far corner. For Ebnoutalib, it was already his third goal of the season. In the closing stages, Augsburg managed the lead souverän and saw the result through to the end.

The victory in Hesse holds special symbolic significance for FC Augsburg. After the club had battled against relegation for much of the previous season, it now sits atop the Bundesliga. Coach Baum spoke after the match of a "historischen Moment" for the club and particularly praised the team's togetherness.

Eintracht Frankfurt suffered its first home defeat of the current season. Coach Dino Toppmöller was particularly frustrated with the finishing: „Wir hatten in der ersten Halbzeit genug Möglichkeiten, um das Spiel früh zu entscheiden. Am Ende haben wir dann in den entscheidenden Situationen die falschen Entscheidungen getroffen", the coach said at the post-match press conference.

Table situation after matchday

In the table, FC Augsburg sits at the top after this matchday with 13 points from five games, followed by Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen. Eintracht Frankfurt slipped to sixth place. Next weekend, Augsburg hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Frankfurt must travel to Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga has thus delivered another surprise at the start of the season. After the 3-1 coup in Frankfurt, all of Augsburg is looking ahead to the upcoming matches – with the confidence of a table leader behind them. The club, whose stadium will host a top match this weekend, is already planning for an increased attendance at its home ground.
