Background: The Negreira case

FC Barcelona has filed a mandatory conciliation request in Spain and is threatening Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez with a criminal complaint for defamation should he not retract his controversial statements about the Negreira case.

The Catalan club announced it has filed a conciliation request against Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and is threatening a criminal defamation complaint should he fail to retract his controversial statements regarding the Negreira case.

The dispute centers on the so-called Negreira case. Between 2001 and 2018, FC Barcelona made payments totaling approximately 8.4 million euros to companies linked to José María Enríquez Negreira, then vice president of Spain's Technical Committee of Referees, according to investigations. Barça denies having bribed referees or manipulated matches. The club has described the payments as "professional advisory" services from a person with "experience in refereeing matters" — services that other clubs also engaged in.
