Berlin, July 6, 2026

On July 6, 2026, the federal cabinet approved a draft bill by Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil that will raise taxes on spirits, champagne and sparkling wine, liqueur wines, and alcopops by around 20 percent starting in January 2027.

The draft provides for tax rates on spirits such as rum, vodka and Korn, as well as on sparkling wines and alcopops, to increase by approximately 20 percent each from January 2027. The Federal Ministry of Finance expects additional revenues of 455 million euros per year, which are to flow into the federal budget. A 0.7-liter bottle of 40 percent vodka, for example, would become more expensive by just under 90 cents as a result.
