Berlin, 24 August 2026
The Federal Ministry of Economics expressed satisfaction on Monday over the current fill levels of Germany's gas storage facilities ahead of the start of the heating season and described the supply situation as stable.
The ministry pointed to data from the Federal Network Agency, according to which storage facilities are filled above average and the supply of natural gas for the coming winter is considered secure. The positive assessment was announced on Monday in Berlin and comes at a time when the federal government and the states are preparing for potential bottlenecks in energy supply.
The background to this assessment is the changed security situation on the European gas market since Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Germany has significantly reduced its dependence on Russian pipeline gas over the past years and now covers a large portion of its needs through liquefied gas imports from, among others, the United States. The expansion of LNG terminals and long-term supply contracts have diversified procurement.
