Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial on Tuesday, the former central remand prison of the Ministry for State Security of the GDR, and laid a wreath at a monument for the victims of communist tyranny.

After touring the memorial and speaking with former prisoners, Steinmeier stated that it is a place of remembrance for arbitrariness and tyranny. "This is a place of remembrance for arbitrariness and tyranny," he said. At the same time, it is a place where the memory is kept alive that the people's desire for freedom cannot be permanently suppressed in the end: "But it is also a place where we remember that the people's desire for freedom cannot be permanently suppressed in the end."
