Berlin, 25 August 2026
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier made clear on Monday in Berlin that naturalized citizens must not be second-class citizens and that any attempt to tier citizenship rights according to group affiliation attacks the constitution.
Background of the speech
In a speech before representatives from politics, civil society, and culture, Steinmeier issued a clear warning to those who seek to hierarchically rank what it means to be German. The constitution applies equally to everyone, he emphasized, and no one should be permitted to distinguish between supposedly "real" and "fake" Germans. His appeal was evidently directed against populist currents that, with a view to migration and naturalization, are driving a division of society.
