The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York has subpoenaed four New York Times journalists to testify before a federal grand jury over their reporting on security concerns surrounding a Boeing 747 donated to the United States by Qatar and recently deployed as the new Air Force One.

The four bylined reporters — Julian E. Barnes, Eric Lipton, Tyler Pager and Eric Schmitt — all received subpoenas on Friday evening, when federal agents delivered the documents to the journalists' homes. The subpoenas direct the four to appear before a federal grand jury in Manhattan on Wednesday.

The underlying report

The Times published the article at the center of the dispute on Wednesday, citing anonymous sources. It reported that the U.S. Secret Service had urged President Donald Trump to leave the recent NATO summit in Turkey aboard an older version of Air Force One rather than the Boeing 747 donated by Qatar last year, citing security concerns about the donated aircraft.

The new Air Force One, which entered service last week, lacked defensive countermeasures that were standard security features of the older model, including its advanced antimissile capabilities, according to the Times. The plane was received by Trump as a gift from Qatar.
