Reactions from the federal party

With his latest statement, Fellner adopted a mediating position. He neither spoke out in favor of unconditional willingness to enter a coalition nor categorically ruled out any alliances. Instead, he pointed to the need for case-by-case talks following an election outcome.

In Carinthia, where the SPÖ traditionally has a strong organizational base, the nationwide polls carry particular weight. Fellner is regarded as one of the few remaining state representatives whose voice still finds a hearing within the federal party.

Outlook on upcoming elections

Alongside the coalition questions, the party is also grappling with how to position its profile vis-à-vis smaller parties. Fellner had previously identified cooperation with very small parties as a possible option, which drew opposition within the federal party.

The SPÖ, Fellner said in essence, faces a dual challenge: on the one hand, communicating its own values and policies more clearly again, and on the other, resolving tactical blockades within the party. Neither could be achieved without an open debate.

With an eye to the upcoming state elections and the next National Council election, Fellner's statement is likely to be read as the prelude to a broader in-party discussion. The coming weeks will show whether the SPÖ can halt its downward trend in the polls or continue to lose support.
