Fernpass demo brings north-south route to a standstill: Travelers should expect closure on June 27

Background: Second demo already announced

Citizens' initiatives have already announced another demonstration at the Fernpass, this time for July 1. Whether there will also be a closure on that day is still unclear. According to information from the facts, the state of Tyrol wants to wait for the experience of the first demo before deciding on further action. The situation for travelers therefore remains uncertain in the coming days.

The Schwaben Süd/West police headquarters warns of significant impacts on travel traffic and advises: "Von nicht unbedingt erforderlichen Fahrten in Richtung Tirol rät die Polizei an diesem Tag ab". At the same time, the police points out: "Die Ausweichrouten werden nach derzeitigem Erkenntnisstand stark belastet sein." ADAC Südbayern also recommends travelers to postpone the timing of their trip if possible.

Alternative routes and recommendations

According to the available information, there are mainly two alternative routes available. The first route leads via the A96 toward Lindau and then via the Austrian Rheintal autobahn A14 toward Tyrol and Western Austria. The second option is to drive via the A8 autobahn from Munich to the Inntal triangle and then via the A93 near Kiefersfelden onto the Inntal autobahn A12.

ADAC Südbayern expects the alternative routes to also be heavily used. Spokeswoman Miriam Melanie Köhler says: "Wir hoffen, dass von den Kundgebungen keine Signalwirkung ausgeht". The automobile club thus expresses the concern that further protest actions could follow on the north-south routes.

Tyrolean driving bans worsen the situation

In addition to the traffic situation, conditions are being worsened by the Tyrolean summer driving bans for alternative traffic. These apply on June 27 and thus hit exactly the day of the demonstration. Vehicles that are already diverting via alternative routes are therefore subject to additional restrictions.

The experiences from the Brenner have shown how quickly a short-term closure can turn into days of traffic chaos. Even though the action at the Fernpass is limited in time, it illustrates the growing importance that citizens' initiatives attach to their protests at the sensitive points of north-south traffic.

Tips for travelers

For travelers heading toward Tyrol on June 27, ADAC Südbayern recommends starting as early in the day as possible or postponing the trip to another day. Seebacher also points out a problem that arises during longer traffic jams: "Ab drei Stunden Stau macht man sich Gedanken, wie man die Menschen in den Fahrzeugen versorgt." The supply of travelers during a traffic jam therefore remains a logistical challenge.

The demonstration at the Fernpass is part of a growing number of protest actions along the transalpine traffic routes. The actors draw attention to the burdens caused by rising transit traffic. For travelers, this means they have to be prepared for short-term changes and should follow current traffic reports particularly closely.
