Fernpass in Tyrol closed again on 1 August

A full closure is to be expected in the Reutte/Katzenberg section, as is the case in the Nassereith/Rastland area. On 1 August, the authorities also anticipate significantly increased travel traffic, because the summer holidays begin in several German federal states. This means the start of the holidays and the closure coincide, further aggravating congestion and diversions.

The state government pointed out that, in addition to the actual demonstrations, upstream and downstream traffic must also be taken into account. Arrival and departure flows must be planned for, as well as possible shifts of congestion onto detour routes. With this reasoning, Tyrol is maintaining the closure.

Impact on travel traffic

The authorities recommend that travelers take a wide detour around the Fernpass on 1 August. Anyone who still has to travel through the Inn Valley or over the Arlberg should allow sufficient time and follow traffic reports. The Hahntennjoch road as well as smaller passes in the region can also be more heavily used by traffic diverting.

For travel between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg toward South Tyrol and Italy, the closure means a detour via the Kufstein border crossing or via Switzerland. Freight carriers and commuters must prepare for longer travel times. The Tyrolean authorities ask travelers to use the signed detours.

The closure affects not only long-distance travel but also regional traffic between places such as Heiterwang and Nassereith. Residents have been informed of the closure times and access regulations. Emergency services and supply trips will remain accessible.

Comparison with previous years

In previous years, Tyrol had already experienced demonstrations on the Fernpass on 1 August and responded with closures. The state refers to the experience that protests regularly increase along the heavily traveled holiday route. The closure is intended to prevent travelers and demonstrators from coming into conflict with each other.

The state government announced that it will continuously monitor the situation on 1 August and consider further measures if necessary. After the closure is lifted, traffic will be released gradually once the roads have been cleared and secured.

Advice for travelers

Travelers are advised to check the current traffic situation before starting their journey and to plan sufficient breaks. Anyone who depends on the Fernpass should examine alternative routes early, for example via the Brenner or the Swiss national road A13.

The police announced that closures at both ends of the route will be strictly enforced. Violations of the closure could be punished with penalties, according to the state government.
