FIFA orders review of possible 64-team World Cup

Criticism of the expansion

Critics point out that even the increase from 32 to 48 teams had already posed enormous logistical and organizational challenges in the run-up. A further expansion would intensify these questions.

The world governing body is under pressure to justify the project. Following the failed marketing of ticket packages and pressure from sponsor circles, the FIFA is seeking ways to open up new revenue streams and enhance the World Cup product.

Economic background

Supporters argue that more participants would increase global reach and give additional markets access to the tournament. Growth potential in regions such as South America is also cited in this context.

At the same time, players' associations and coaches warn of an even greater burden on those involved. Many professionals already complain about a high density of competitive matches today; an extended finals tournament would further increase the strain.
