The association of European leagues has called on world body Fifa to undertake sweeping reforms, accusing it of unilaterally making disruptive decisions to the detriment of professional football.

The association of European professional leagues, which operates under the umbrella of the European Leagues organisation, has intensified its criticism of Fifa. In a statement published on Wednesday, the grouping is demanding fundamental structural changes at the world body. The leagues accuse Fifa of exercising its power without sufficient consultation with national competitions.

At the heart of the criticism is the concern that Fifa makes decisions about international tournaments and the match calendar without adequately taking into account the economic and sporting impact on national league operations. The European leagues see this as a threat to the competitiveness of their competitions and to the burden on players.
