What is the conflict about?

Behind the conflict lie very concrete economic interests. The European leagues finance a substantial part of international football through TV rights, sponsorship, and ticketing. They argue that an ever more sprawling occupation of the international match calendar by Fifa tournaments threatens their national value creation. Fifa, in turn, depends on revenue from major events such as World Cups.

The dispute is not new. A similar project in the past, the so-called FFE initiative, was unsuccessful. The failed negotiations from earlier rounds show how deep the mistrust between the European leagues and Fifa runs.
