A major fire broke out on Saturday in the port of the Ecuadorian port city of Manta, destroying at least 35 boats at the harbor's anchorage, according to preliminary figures from the authorities.
Extent of the Damage
As the Ecuadorian risk management agency reported, two people were injured in the fire. The injuries and the extent of the damage to individuals are currently being recorded by the rescue services. The fire occurred in the area of the anchorage, where predominantly smaller and medium-sized fishing boats made of easily flammable materials such as fiberglass were moored.
The National Secretariat for Risk Management stated that the fire has now been brought under control. Videos circulating on social networks showed flames and black columns of smoke rising from the water. The dense smoke was visible over large parts of the port area, according to eyewitness reports.
