A forest fire in the southern Spanish province of Almería has killed at least twelve people and burned an area equivalent to 9,400 football pitches, with more than twenty people still reported missing.

Update of 13 July 2026: Two days after the initial report, authorities in southern Spain are still working to contain a major forest fire in the province of Almería that has now destroyed an area the size of 9,400 football pitches, according to the broadcaster Deutschlandfunk, which aired the story on 11 July 2026. The death toll stands at twelve, with more than twenty people still listed as missing.

The fire broke out in the Andalusian region and continued to spread as of the most recent reporting. More than 1,400 residents were forced to leave their homes overnight, fleeing villages in and around the municipalities of Los Gallardos and Bédar as flames advanced toward populated areas.
