At least twelve people have died and 23 others are still missing in a forest fire in the Andalusian municipality of Los Gallardos in the province of Almería.

Scale of the disaster

The fire broke out on Thursday afternoon in the 3,000-resident municipality of Los Gallardos, located roughly 300 kilometers northeast of Málaga, and spread rapidly. According to authorities, the flames had consumed nearly 4,000 hectares of land by Friday evening. The fire ignited simultaneously in three locations and tore through farms, vacation homes, and cars.

Antonio Sanz spoke of an "unprecedented tragedy" and described the blaze as a forest fire "with the most severe consequences to date" in Andalusia. "The consequences are terrible," Sanz told the Spanish news agency EFE. According to his information, everything indicates that "most or all" of the victims are foreign nationals.
