Eisenhüttenstadt, 26 July 2026

A nest of the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax) was discovered for the first time in the German state of Brandenburg, under the eaves of an office building in Eisenhüttenstadt, and is being deliberately removed.

First Confirmation in Brandenburg

The discovery of the nest in Eisenhüttenstadt marks the first confirmed occurrence of Vespa velutina nigrithorax in Brandenburg. Brandenburg's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in Potsdam said the find near the state's eastern border was surprising. The ministry linked the discovery most likely to a queen that had been accidentally transported by humans, allowing the species to gain a foothold far from its existing German range.
