Essen, 11 June 2026
Nearly six months after one of Germany's most spectacular heists, the first civil proceedings brought by affected customers against the Sparkasse Gelsenkirchen begin on Thursday at the Essen Regional Court.
Background of the Heist
The case is considered one of the most remarkable criminal cases of recent years. A few days after Christmas, unknown perpetrators broke into the Sparkasse branch in Gelsenkirchen-Buer, used a large core drill to bore a hole in the wall to the vault, and broke into more than 3,000 safe deposit boxes. According to the indictment, they left behind over 50,000 valuables.
