Trial in Wels: four defendants accused of blowing up ATMs plead partially guilty

A proceeding described as a «Mafiaprozess»

According to the charges collected in the sources, those arrested are said to have managed to obtain approximately half a million euros through these attacks on ATMs. German-language media have summarized the haul with the expression «Bankomatsprenger erbeuteten halbe Million Euro», an amount that shows the economic scale of the criminal activity being tried. The Regional Court of Wels (Landesgericht Wels) is the competent authority directing the hearings, in which justice officials and custodial officers are taking part.

The acts attributed to the organization are not limited to a single location. From the data published by Austrian media it emerges that the actions under investigation are said to have spread to other localities as well, including Wien, Gmunden, Brunn am Gebirge and areas of Bayern, as well as links to the Netherlands. This geographical dispersion has been one of the elements that the press has stressed in order to support the classification of the proceedings as a mafia-type case, by suggesting a structure with operational capacity beyond a single municipality.

Geographical scope of the attacks

During the trial, some of the four defendants are said to have made partial admissions of the facts, known as «Teilgeständnisse». Partial confessions are a common figure in Austrian procedural practice and allow the accused to recognize part of the charges in exchange for possible mitigating circumstances in sentencing. The prosecution maintains that the gang is behind «unzählige Vorfälle», that is, a very large number of ATM-blowing incidents.
