In Austria, five popular initiatives can be signed starting this week, with more than 6.3 million people in total eligible to vote.
Who is allowed to sign
Starting Monday, signature week begins for five popular initiatives, during which Austrian citizens can register their support. Anyone who reaches voting age no later than the 22nd of the current month is entitled to sign. Signing is possible online by means of a signature and, in most municipalities, also in person.
In total, more than 6.3 million people in Austria are eligible to support the current popular initiatives. If an initiative reaches the threshold of 100,000 signatures, it is constitutionally required to be debated in the National Council. This gives citizens a direct instrument to force parliamentary debates.
