Vienna, June 14, 2026
In Austria, the entry week for five new popular initiatives begins on Monday, June 15, 2026, covering topics from holiday regulations and police resources to contraception and electoral law.
The entry week runs from June 15 through June 22, 2026. Signatures can be submitted in most municipalities as well as online via the platform of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Once an initiative reaches the threshold of 100,000 signatures, it must be dealt with in the National Council according to the Council's rules.
Good Friday as a public holiday
One of the most prominent causes comes from a movement associated with former judge Martin Wabl. It demands that Good Friday be declared an official public holiday in Austria. Until now, Good Friday is only a non-working day for members of certain Christian churches.
