The European Union has, as part of the new PPWR Packaging Regulation, set concrete targets for reducing packaging waste and increasing plastic recycling by 2030 and 2040.

The tightened rules are part of the EU Packaging Regulation, supplementing previously defined recycling targets by 2030. Accordingly, the recycling rate for plastic packaging is to reach 50 percent by 2025 and 55 percent by 2030. These targets are binding and apply equally in all member states.

Newly added are targets at the level of individual member states for reducing per capita packaging waste. By 2030, packaging waste per capita is to fall by at least five percent, and by 2040 by at least 15 percent. With this, the EU is responding to the sharply rising packaging volumes in recent years.
