Tolmezzo, August 17, 2026

A large-scale forest fire is hitting Friuli near Tolmezzo and Illegio, with a health alert extended to 17 municipalities, while Carinthia has deployed helicopters to collect water from Lake Weissensee to support the firefighting operations.

The fire, reported by ORF, broke out in a mountainous area of northern Friuli not far from the borders with Austria, affecting the municipal territories around Tolmezzo and the village of Illegio. The cloud of smoke and falling ashes have prompted health authorities to extend an alert covering a total of 17 municipalities, with recommendations to the population to limit outdoor activities and protect their airways.

Firefighting operations are hampered by the terrain and typical weather conditions of the period. Italian fire brigade teams and aerial assets are operating on site, while regional civil protection maintains open cross-border coordination with the Austrian authorities.
