A forest fire in the steep Latschen-covered slopes above Werfen in Salzburg's Pongau district reignited on Thursday, requiring renewed helicopter water-bombing and ground operations by around 50 emergency personnel.

The blaze, located in the Bäreckrinne area near Werfen at roughly 1,600 metres above sea level, initially consumed a Latschenfeld — a field of dwarf mountain pine — of about 170 square metres before spreading rapidly upward through inaccessible terrain, according to local fire officials."Latschen" (Pinus mugo) are low-growing mountain pines that dominate the subalpine zone in the Eastern Alps. Their resinous wood burns readily, especially in dry, exposed ridges.

Two helicopters, dispatched from Salzburg and Klagenfurt, carried out around 30 turns and dropped roughly 13,000 litres of water on the flames in a prolonged aerial operation. The flights were complemented by what officials described as a dangerous ground attack along the steep ridge, the Tau, where crews worked on foot to contain the fire's uphill spread.
