Forest fire in the Hohes Venn threatens Monschau and Hürtgenwald

According to local authorities, most people in the directly affected towns of Monschau and the surrounding area were still on summer vacation. Hotels and holiday apartments in the town area remained partially open to accommodate emergency personnel.

Authorities warn of persistent forest fire danger

The mayors of both affected municipalities expressed cautious optimism on Tuesday, but warned against premature reassurance. They said from the town hall that they were prepared for a prolonged operation. The Städteregion set up an information hotline and regularly updated a digital map showing the current exclusion zones. The German Red Cross and the Malteser relief service also provided medical services.

Initial analyses by the forestry authorities indicate that the ground in parts of the Hohes Venn has been severely dried out by the ongoing summer drought. The nature conservation administration pointed out that, especially in the moors, the organic peat layers can continue to smolder as buried hot spots for weeks after a fire. Firefighting in such areas is particularly labor-intensive.

Impact on residents

Parallel to the operation in the Eifel, the federal government is preparing for possible further natural events. The Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance pointed out that the forest fire danger would remain elevated across large parts of Germany in the coming weeks. Citizens were urged to avoid open flames in the forest and to report any suspicious smoke developments immediately.

The debate about the condition of Germany's forests was also widely discussed on social media. Several forestry experts pointed to the advancing climate change, which is contributing to the drying out of soils. Citizens in Cologne and other major Rhenish cities also discussed whether urban greening needed to be expanded in view of rising temperatures.

According to the operations command, the deployment in the Eifel is not yet over. The next 48 hours are considered decisive, because a weather change with thunderstorms and wind gusts could help in the short term, but lightning strikes could also trigger new fires. The authorities announced that the disaster alert would be maintained until the situation is permanently under control.
