Monschau warns residents of health risks from Venn fire smoke

The municipality stated that concentrations of certain pollutants in the air could be elevated. Levels such as particulate matter (PM2.5) and reactive organic compounds typically rise sharply during forest fires. Such particles can cause respiratory irritation, headaches, or eye irritation in sensitive individuals.

Recommendations from the municipality

Specifically, the administration recommended avoiding prolonged outdoor activity, keeping windows and doors closed, and operating air conditioning systems preferably not in recirculation mode. People with pre-existing respiratory conditions, cardiovascular patients, pregnant women, children, and the elderly were urged to take special precautions.

The warning explicitly applies to nearby municipalities, including, alongside Monschau, parts of Roetgen and the greater Aachen city region. In Cologne, Leverkusen, and the Rhein-Erft district, the smell of smoke has also occasionally been noticeable in recent days, according to the city of Cologne.

The situation at the fire itself remained tense according to authorities. Despite the deployment of numerous fire engines and firefighting helicopters, containment has proven difficult because the peat in the high moor continues to smolder in places at depths of several meters. Weather services did not expect any significant precipitation in the coming days, complicating conditions for the emergency crews.

Monschau also pointed to the citizen hotlines of the municipality and the Aachen city region, which are available for questions about air quality and recommended behavior. Updates on the situation were to be distributed via the warning app NINA and the administration's social media channels. Residents were asked to check these channels regularly for updates.

Health authorities pointed out that symptoms were usually temporary as long as exposure did not persist over too long a period. However, if symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or severe irritation of the mucous membranes persist, medical help should be sought. Pharmacies and general medical practices in the region were prepared for possible inquiries.
