After the major fire in the Hohes Venn nature reserve on the Belgian-German border, Belgian investigating authorities have initiated proceedings amid suspicion that a farm machine triggered the blaze.
The fire broke out on August 25, 2026, and spread rapidly through the cross-border protected area between Belgium and Germany. According to Belgian authorities, initial evidence points to the use of an agricultural machine as a possible cause. A relevant prosecution authority has taken over the investigation.
The Hohes Venn, known in French as "Hautes Fagnes," is considered one of the largest highland bog areas in Western Europe and is designated as a nature reserve across the borders of Belgium and Germany. The fire destroyed a significant area of the sensitive bog, known for its specialized flora and fauna, according to initial estimates.
