The largest forest fire ever recorded near Fontainebleau south of Paris is continuing to rage and has destroyed more than 2,000 hectares of forest according to authorities; around 850 firefighters are battling the blaze.

Scale of the Blaze

Since Sunday, the largest forest fire ever registered in the Forest of Fontainebleau has been raging. The Forest of Fontainebleau, located about 60 kilometers south of the capital, is a popular local recreation destination for Parisians. According to authorities, the fire has so far destroyed more than 2,000 hectares of forest – a significant portion of the so-called green lung of Paris.

Around 850 firefighters are deployed against the flames. Authorities stated, "rund 850 Feuerwehrleute seien im Einsatz." Additionally, four Canadair firefighting aircraft are supporting the ground troops, "die im Niedrigflug Wasser aus der Seine schöpfen." Due to the persistent wind, the fire keeps flaring up again at two major fire fronts, it was further reported.
