A forest fire has broken out in the Forêt de Fontainebleau, 50 kilometers south of Paris, which according to the fire department has already destroyed 800 hectares of forest and continues to spread.

Extent and Location of the Fire

The fire, which broke out on a Sunday afternoon on the edge of a motorway, quickly spread to the Forêt de Fontainebleau. The forest, which contains the château of the same name, is one of the largest contiguous woodland areas in Western Europe. Fire department officials said the fire was not yet under control and was continuing to spread.

According to government spokesperson Maud Bregeon, it is an "extraordinary situation," and the state is mobilizing all resources to combat the flames. The scale of the fire is "extraordinary," said the deputy prefect of the region, Yannis Bouzar.

Evacuation and Rescue Operation

The mayor of the town of Le Vaudoué described to broadcaster BFMTV a "wall of flames" moving very quickly that had reached the first houses on the edge of the commune. More than 1,000 residents and tourists had been evacuated, the mayor of Le Vaudoué told BFMTV.
