Forest fire near Pernegg: Over 100 emergency personnel battle flames in steep terrain

The affected wooded area is located in a topographically challenging section of the S35. Steep slopes, rocky ground, and narrow access roads make it difficult for the firefighting crews to advance. In addition, the ongoing drought in the region is making it harder to contain the source of the fire, as the flames can easily spread across the dry ground cover.

Local residents were informed through the district warning system. According to reports so far, one side of the S35 in the Pernegg area remains closed, with traffic being diverted locally. According to the incident command, there was initially no direct threat to residential buildings.

Bernd Fladischer, the on-site incident commander, appealed to the public to give the area a wide berth and to follow the instructions of the emergency personnel. The fire department also warned against unnecessary walks or bike rides in the adjacent wooded areas.

The incident is part of a series of forest fires that have kept Styria busy during the summer months. Observers note that operational readiness in the districts remains high and that reinforcements from neighboring fire departments can be called in should the situation worsen in the evening.
