A man and a child, believed by authorities to belong to the same family, died on Tuesday in a forest fire near the Greek city of Thessaloniki.

According to Greek authorities, the two victims perished in the flames, which spread on the outskirts of Thessaloniki. A third person was taken to a hospital with burn injuries. The fire affected a wooded area and, according to the TV channel ERT, was observed over a stretch of roughly five kilometers.

Background: Location and scale of the fire

The Greek meteorological service and the operations center initially did not release a final cause of the fire. Strong winds helped the flames spread through the wooded terrain. Residents of a village near the major city of Thessaloniki were called on to leave their homes.
