Meißen, June 28, 2026
In the Gohrischheide in the district of Meißen, the forest fire that broke out on Saturday afternoon spread further during the night to Sunday; around 170 emergency personnel are battling the flames on the munitions-contaminated terrain.
The fire was reported on Saturday at around 3:00 p.m. in the area of the woodland between Zeithain and the Elbe, as confirmed by the Saxony Situation Center and the Dresden Police Directorate. As the deputy chief of the Zeithain fire department, Marco Bretschneider, explained, the fire spread rapidly in the afternoon. "Die Feuerwehr hat in der Nacht versucht, den erneuten Waldbrand in der Gohrischheide unter Kontrolle zu bringen", the emergency personnel stated.
According to the emergency personnel, around 40 hectares of forest and heathland have by now burned – "Das entspricht fast dem Fünfachen der Fläche des Leipziger Hauptbahnhofs". The Gohrischheide is located on a former military training area on the state border between Saxony and Brandenburg and is partially designated as a nature reserve.
