Four former presidents of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal sharply criticized President Karol Nawrocki on Sunday in a joint statement over his interference in the judiciary.
The signatories Marek Safjan, Jerzy Stepien, Bohdan Zdziennicki and Andrzej Zoll said Nawrocki’s actions were an “unprecedented violation of the court’s independence” and did not contribute to resolving the conflict. In doing so, they placed the political neutrality and institutional independence of the Constitutional Tribunal at the center of their criticism.
The statement was issued amid a conflict between Poland’s state institutions. Verified information indicates that the dispute concerns the role of the Constitutional Tribunal and the president’s influence over the judiciary. The specific disagreements and those involved are not further elaborated in the statement.
