San Francisco, June 14, 2026
The former NFL pro Aldon Smith has died at the age of 36, as his former club, the San Francisco 49ers, announced.
The San Francisco 49ers expressed being "devastated" over the loss of their former pass-rusher. In a statement released by the club on Saturday, it said: "We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith." No cause of death was given.
Smith was selected by the 49ers with the seventh pick of the 2011 NFL Draft. In his first two professional seasons alone, he recorded 33.5 sacks – a figure considered in NFL circles to be a record for the early phase of a career. With the 49ers, he reached the Super Bowl but was unable to win the championship game.
Career in the NFL
Over the course of his career, Smith played not only for the 49ers but also for the Oakland Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys. Most recently, however, he was no longer active in the league: After a six-month prison sentence to which he was convicted in 2023 for driving under the influence of alcohol, he did not return to the NFL.
