George Russell set the fastest time in the first free practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, putting his Mercedes in first place.
Mercedes with a one-two lead
George Russell posted the fastest lap on Friday in the first free practice session of Formula 1 in Madrid, finishing clearly ahead of his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli. The Briton thereby underscored the team's strong form at the Circuito de Madrid, which features on this season's race calendar. Mercedes had hoped in advance for a circuit that suits the concept of its current car – and the opening session justified that assessment.
Behind the two Silver Arrows, the rest of the field lined up with the usual tight gaps. Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull each brought updates to the circuit and spent the practice sessions searching for the optimal setup. Since the long-term effects of the setup decisions only become apparent in qualifying and the race, Friday's sessions primarily served the purpose of gathering data.
