Four exhausted Polish mountaineers were recovered on Thursday evening, July 9, 2026, from the Breithorn in the Steinernes Meer in Pinzgau by the police helicopter "Libelle," after they were no longer able to progress in exposed terrain at around 2,400 meters above sea level.
Initial situation: Ascent from Maria Alm
The two men and two women had set off in the afternoon from Maria Alm in Pinzgau toward the Breithorn (2,504 meters above sea level). Their goal was the southern ascent to the summit in the Steinernes Meer. The route is marked and shown on all standard maps, as mountain rescuer Bernd Tritscher, district leader in Pinzgau, explained: "Die Tour ist markiert und in allen Karten eingezeichnet, aber sie führt über sehr ausgesetztes Gelände mit einigen Stellen, die im dritten Schwierigkeitsgrad liegen".
