Kals am Großglockner, July 06, 2026
Two Czech alpinists aged 32 and 27 spent a night in an emergency bivouac at around 3,700 meters altitude on the Großglockner following a weather deterioration over the weekend, and were escorted down into the valley by the Kals mountain rescue team and an alpine police officer on Sunday morning.
The two Czech climbers had set out on Saturday morning via the Stüdlgrat when conditions on the mountain dramatically worsened. At the so-called Frühstücksplatzl at 3,550 meters altitude, strong winds combined with snowfall set in during the early afternoon, making further progress initially impossible.
After nightfall, the mountaineers decided to set up an emergency bivouac at around 3,700 meters altitude in order to survive the night. A helicopter operation was out of the question due to the persistently poor weather conditions, according to the police.
