A court in Tehran has sentenced Iranian musician Hiwa Sefisadeh to four years in prison for "incitement to corruption" after he performed at a concert for singer Parastu Ahmadi.
The conviction followed Sefisadeh's appearance at a concert by Iranian singer Parastu Ahmadi, which the judiciary deemed a violation of public order. In its ruling, the court cited the charge of "incitement to corruption," a catchall offense frequently invoked in Iran's legal system against regime-critical statements and artistic acts.
The protest movement "Woman, Life, Freedom" took shape in Iran in autumn 2022 and was directed against repressive policies of the Islamic Republic, including the strict dress code for women. Security forces cracked down violently on the demonstrations, drawing international criticism and permanently exacerbating the country's domestic political situation.
