France is preparing for what Météo-France described on Sunday as its first official heat wave of the year, with temperatures in some cities forecast to approach 40°C from Wednesday, while Austria's GeoSphere Austria predicted highs of up to 35°C by Friday.
France: thresholds and forecasts
Speaking to AFP, a forecaster at France's national meteorological institute, Corentin Perrot, said the country would enter a new spell of high temperatures from midweek. "On sait qu'on enclenche, à partir du milieu de la semaine, un épisode de chaleur," he said, adding that the event could be classified as the year's first full heat wave. He noted that the late-May episode had been "exceptionnel de par sa précocité" but had not met the threshold for a heat wave.
