Linz, 16 July 2026
A study presented on Thursday in Linz by the Fraunhofer Institute forecasts that the Europe-wide ban on new combustion engines from 2035 threatens nearly all jobs in Austria's automotive supply industry.
The study was presented on the day the article was published and paints a bleak picture for most European countries: the phase-out of the internal combustion engine would lead to significant losses in value creation and a substantial reduction in jobs. Austria, as a supplier to the automotive industry, would be particularly hard hit, according to the study.
Even the scenario currently under discussion in Brussels, with a 90 percent CO2 reduction, would continue to put pressure on the domestic supply industry. According to the calculations, a loss of 13 billion euros would be expected under these conditions. Additional concessions for the combustion engine would not be able to offset the losses for Austrian suppliers, according to the study.
