The French professional footballer Kenzo Kies has died at the age of 21 in a swimming accident in the Rhône near his birthplace of Lyon.

As French media reported, Kies was bathing in the river with friends on a Monday when temperatures in the region were reportedly around 40 degrees Celsius. The player was recovered in critical condition, according to the emergency services, and died shortly afterward. During the incident, the fire brigade rescued three other people from the water.

Bathing in the Rhône is officially banned at the site of the accident and is considered dangerous. The incident occurred in the context of a Europe-wide heatwave that has already caused further swimming fatalities in France.
