Porto Torres, Sardinia, 25 May 2026
A 69-year-old French woman was caught attempting to board a ferry from Sardinia to Toulon with approximately 40 kilograms of sand, pebbles, and shells, Italian customs officials reported on 25 May 2026.
The tourist had gathered the material from Le Saline beach near Stintino in northern Sardinia, investigators said. Her luggage contained bags filled with white sand, small stones, and various shells collected during her holiday.
She was stopped at the port of Porto Torres while preparing to embark on a ferry bound for Toulon, in southern France. Customs officers carried out routine checks and discovered the heavy souvenirs.
