Bundesliga club GAK has signed ÖFB team goalkeeper Cican Stankovic, bringing the 33-year-old Lower Austrian back to Austria.

Voice from Graz

GAK is announcing a prominent new signing: with Cican Stankovic, the club has signed a goalkeeper whose résumé needs no introduction in the domestic football scene. Sporting director Tino Wawra, who publicly confirmed the transfer, sees clear sporting arguments in the deal for the club from Graz.

„Zur Vita von Cican muss man eigentlich nicht viel sagen, die ist bekannt und herausragend. Was ihm aktuell noch fehlt, ist die Matchpraxis, aber ich denke, bei einem Spieler seines Formats ist die schnell wieder da", erklärte GAK-Sportdirektor Tino Wawra. The club official thereby formulates the central expectation for the transfer: Stankovic is to stabilize the position between the posts at GAK and, with his experience, provide immediate reinforcement.

Stankovic's career to date reads like a collection of the highest national and international titles in Austrian and Greek club football. He collected six league titles with RB Salzburg, along with appearances in the Champions League. He earned four caps in the jersey of the ÖFB team before his path took him to Greece, where he won the double of league and cup with AEK Athens in the 2022/23 season.

With this signing, GAK is taking a deliberate step in squad planning. The club, which has recently re-established a stronger presence in Austria's top flight, is banking on a player who brings both title-winning routine and international stage experience – qualities that are rarely found on the transfer market in the Bundesliga.
