Gebi Mair: Cycling Accident in Spain – Green Party Leader Injured

In an initial statement, Mair expressed relief that he had survived the accident relatively unscathed. Back in the summer of 2021, Mair had suffered serious injuries when a rock struck him while climbing in the Kalkkögel in the Stubai Alps. The accident also throws a spotlight on the dangers of cycling on wet or dirty roads. The politician's appeal to be mindful while cycling is in line with recommendations from traffic safety organizations, which advise adjusted speeds and suitable tires, especially on tours abroad.

Spain is a popular destination for road and touring cyclists from Central Europe, not least because the road network is well developed in many regions. Around the Atlantic coast and in the Basque Country, where San Sebastián is located, however, rainfall and leaves can make the road surface slippery. Locals point out that, especially in the summer months, sudden weather changes are not uncommon.
